FOXSports.com - MLB - Pavano working on deal with Yankees

It appears that Carlpalooza will not be landing in Detroit. Ken Rosenthal of The Sporting News is reporting that Carl Pavano has instructed agent Scott Shapiro to work out a four year, $40 million deal with the New York Yankees.

This is definitely a let down to Detroit and it's fans. A solid ace in the pitching rotation is one of the major keys for this off season, and Pavano would have been the best candidate.

Look for the Tigers to turn their attention to Derek Lower, or Matt Clement.

Tigers turn to 3B Koskie

With Troy Glaus in Arizona, the Tigers have turned to Minnesota Twins free agent Corey Koskie. Koskie hit .251 with 25 home runs, and 71 RBIs last season. He has also seen playoff experience, something the Tigers would like from a veteran.

It is also reported that the Tigers have upped their offer to Carl Pavano from four years to five years. Two major reasons for Pavano's continued interest in the Tigers is Hall of Famer Al Kaline and manager Alan Trammell. "I can't tell you how influential meeting Al Kaline was for Carl," Shapiro said. "He was thrilled at Al's taking the time to sit down with him. And Carl and Tram hit it off," Shapiro said of manager Alan Trammell. "Carl walked away saying, 'I could play for this guy. I would go to the moon for this guy. He's a terrific person.' "

We should start to hear signing news today or tomorrow.

Preview - NCB - South Florida at Michigan and Stanford at Michigan State

Michigan and Michigan State basketball resumes today.

South Florida comes to Ann Arbor for a noon tip off. This will be a good test for the injured Wolverines. The Wolverines must find a way to score without Horton and Abram.

Preview - NCB - South Florida at Michigan

Michigan State is counting on Paul Davis to step his game up to where it should be. Davis has been the talks of inconsistency, and poor free throw shooting most of this season. Stanford will most likely come into this game expecting to shut him down early. If the Spartans can get him and their defense going, they should win.

ESPN.com - MLB - Newest Angel in OF: Finley joins Anaheim

Steve Finley won't be playing CF for the Detroit Tigers. The 39 year old free agent has agreed to a two year, $14 million contract with the Anaheim Angels. Anaheim has boosted their payroll to the levels of Boston and New York since winning the World Series in 2002.

Look for the Tigers to now turn to Carlos Beltran, J.D. Drew, or re-signing Alex Sanchez.

Tigers' Hot Stove Heating Up

Word out of the winter meetings today sounded interesting.

The Tigers are apparently in a bidding war for Edgar Renteria. Renteria was with the St Louis Cardinals last year. He's a short stop, which sparks speculation about what position he would play, or if Carlos Guillen would be moving over to third base.

Also on the radar, J.D. Drew form the Atlanta Braves. Drew hit .305 last season, with 31 home runs. Drew would be a nice addition to the outfield.

I'll have more as it comes in.

ESPN.com - NBA - Preview - Atlanta Hawks at Detroit Pistons

Mike Woodson and Herb Brown return to the palace tonight as the Atlanta Hawks take on the Detroit Pistons.

Detroit comes into the game with a three game winning streak. It is not yet known if Antonio McDyess will return to the lineup.

Atlanta, 3-15, is hoping for a road win to give them a boost. Atlanta is among the leads worst defenders, giving up an average of 101.8 points per game, while only averaging 89.8 point per game in scoring.

The Pistons need to take advantage of the lack of defense, and shooting by the Hawks, and put this one away early.

Edwards, Baas Honored, Horton Injured

There is a bit of good news, and a dose of bad news coming out of Ann Arbor this week.

Braylon Edwards took top honors for receivers last night. Edwards received the Biletnikoff Award, naming him the top wide receiver in college football.

There is another setback for Michigan Basketball. The team announced that Daniel Horton has a sprained knee, and will be out at least one month. The NHL is Listening

Could it be that the NHLPA finally came up with something that Commissioner Gary Bettman will consider? TSN in Canada reports that the NHLPA offered a 24% rollback in salaries, and a luxury tax after $45 million.

"Significant, significant changes,'' said executive director Bob Goodenow. The NHLPA proposal offered opens the door for the league to save $600 million annually in salaries. Is this enough to get Bettman to agree? ''I think it's fair to say that this proposal touched more topics,'' said Bettman. ''Which is again a reason that I can't respond to it until we've been able to digest everything that's in there.''

So there is hope yet for the NHL. Although a deal has not been worked out, it appears for the first time that the two sides are headed in the direction of negotiation. Still, it is too early to tell.

The NHL says it lost $273 million during the 2002-2003 season and $224 million during the 2003-2004 season. The players dispute this, calling the numbers inflated. Regardless of how much is really lost, there is still loss, and it must be fixed for the league to continue.

Two teams have filed for bankruptcy protection. Most teams are operating at a loss. TV coverage is minimal, and the new contract with NBC only pays on advertising sharing revenue.

Mr. Goodenow, please take note of all this. I know what you want is to protect the players, and get the most you can for them. Your efforts shown yesterday are promising, but it is not enough. You must continue to negotiate, and think openly about the league's counter offer.

Mr. Bettman, please continue to digest the information you were given yesterday, and think openly about it when you put together your counter offer.

As for the players, quit talking like the league isn't willing to talk. They are willing to talk, and are showing it. Making $5 million per year instead of $10 million is a livable income. It is a level of income most people don't see over an entire lifetime of working.

More Tigers Noise...Beltre...Drew...Beltran

Peter Gammons reported this morning that the Tigers are one of four teams chasing Carlos Beltran. Carlos Beltran, a free agent Center Fielder, made the most noise during his playoff run with the Houston Astros. Among other teams trying to land Beltran are the Yankees, Astros, and Angels.

Gammons also said that the Tigers might be able to land third baseman Adrian Beltre, and right fielder J.D. Drew in a "package" signing, according to their agent Scott Boras.

The winter meetings start December 10, should be interesting.

No Glaus for the Tigers

Ken Rosenthal of the Sporting News is reporting that Troy Glaus has agreed to a four year, $45 million contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Given that Glaus has seen some injuries, and has never exceeded the mid-.250 batting average range, I'd say the Tigers were lucky not to have him for that price. Brandon Inge is still around, has a better bat, comes at a cheaper price, and is capable of playing third base.

This signing doesn't mean the Tigers are done looking for a replacement third baseman. There are still others out there. Adrian Beltre. Corey Koskie. I'm not overly confident the Tigers will sign either of them though. Koskie has been offered arbitration, and I'm having trouble seeing the Dodgers and Beltre part company.

Reactions to this? Other alternatives? What do you think?

NHL and NHLPA Officials Set To Talk

The last time we saw Steve Yzerman play, he was being helped off the ice. Many of us questioned whether or not that would be the last time we saw the captain step onto the ice. I, for one, was very excited when he signed another one year contract. The thought of getting to see him wave to fans on his final shift, and score one last goal seemed more fitting for his storied 21 year career.

Unfortunately, there's still a chance we won't get to see that.

Today in Toronto, the NHL and NHLPA are getting back to work on a new CBA that would save part of the 2004-2005 hockey season. It isn't a guaranty, but the players feel they have a solution that would get everyone back to business.

Does it include a salary cap?

I'm going to bet that it does not, but that doesn't mean they aren't willing to negotiate one anyway. My guess is that they'll propose a luxury tax that would match each dollar for every dollar that went over $40-45 million. To get any party of a hockey season in, they'd have to get something rolling now to have it ready by January. The players know it, the league officials know it, and everyone wants to start getting paychecks and medical insurance again.

I also wouldn't expect the NHL to open the doors under a tentative agreement either. The last time they did, they ended up getting burned on such things as rookie salary minimum levels. The NHL owners are all business this time, and seem determined that nothing will stay in their way -- even if it means union busting.

Chris Draper of the Detroit Red Wings was heard saying that the players won't accept a $31 million salary cap, but might be willing to talk about something in the $45 million range. The one problem I've seen is that no one is negotiation. They're all presenting, and then demanding. Bettman and Goodenow are both guilty of this.

I don't think I fault the players entirely in this situation. They are mostly brainwashed by the union, and want a "fair" paycheck like any employee would want. I also don't fully fault the league. They want to cut losses out now, and prevent any more teams from going bankrupt.

My advice to both sides is simple. Agree on a fair salary cap. Put in exemptions, such as in the NBA, where teams can go slightly above the cap, without penalty, in order to keep a player for the cycle of his career. I would also suggest that a good revenue sharing plan be put into place. I by this I do not mean revenue sharing that would put more money into the player's pockets, but revenue sharing that would be spread amongst the league owners, to help pay the bills.

This season can be saved if the heads of the NHL and the NHLPA open their minds a little bit, and stop viewing the other as the enemy. Each side wants the same goal met, and it's time they act like it.

ESPN.com - NBA - Recap - Raptors at Pistons

Vince Carter left tonight's game early in the 2nd half with a strained achilles. After that, it was all Raptors. The raptors went on a 15-0 run to tie the game just before the end of regulation.

The Pistons managed to squeak out this win 90-86 in OT. Solid defense and perfect free throws from Chauncey Billups helped the Pistons fight off the Raptors.

FOXSports.com - NBA - Five Pacers charged with assault and battery

Oakland County Prosecutor David Gorcyca is finally filing charges against five Indiana Pacers, and five fans, for their part in the November 19 brawl at the Palace.

Ron Artest, Stephen Jackson, David Harrison, and Anthony Johnson are charged with one count of assault and battery, a misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of $500 and three months in jail.

Jermaine O'Neal is charged with two counts of assault and battery.

As for the fans, the chair thrower is expected to get a felony assault charge. I would imagine that the other fans, including the cup thrower, and Ben Wallace's brother, will get assault and battery charges.

Stephen Jackson insists he's innocent. "David was acting as the peacekeeper throughout that evening," he said. "He was trying to make sure everybody was safe." I guess he thinks punching people is peacemaking.

I think these charges are sufficient. Obviously the most serious one is the chair throwing that left an older man unconscious, and with a concussion. I do not agree that the NBA has taken care of the legalities of this by suspending the players. The two often go hand in hand, and trigger each other respectively.

Too stiff? Not enough? What do you think?

Tigers Seek Finley For Center Field

Yesterday I wrote about the Tigers' off-season efforts. Here is a follow up on Steve Finley.

The deadline passed last night, and the Dodgers did not offer Steve Finley arbitration. That leaves Steve Finley open to the free agent market, where the Tigers have reportedly offered the 39 year old center fielder a two year, $16 million contract.

Finley is coming off a 36 home run, gold glove year in which he played all 162 games. Finley is in unusually great shape for a player of his age, and would make a great addition until Granderson is ready to step up to the MLB level.

I feel that the Tigers are justified in this offer. Though it may seem high at first, remember the Tigers are going to have to slightly over pay for players, and Finley's health and numbers rival anyone in their mid-30s.

Thoughts, comments, disagreements?

ESPN.com - NBA - Preview - Toronto Raptors at Detroit Pistons

The Raptors visit the Palace tonight to take on the Pistons. Toronto enters the game 7-13 with a four game losing streak. The Raptors are not a particularly good defensive team, giving up and average of 99.8 points per game. Vince Carter and Jalen Rose lead all scorers for Toronto. Rafer Alston leads them in assists. I would expect Detroit to press Rose on the perimeter, and Carter in the paint.

It will be interesting to see how Detroit handles the Raptors. They lost the first meeting of the season (November 5) 101-89. Detroit is coming into the game with a 2 game winning streak, including an impressive win in Dallas on Monday. They should continue to press on defense, and attack from the perimeter.

Prediction: Detroit 92, Raptors 77

Lions Blues are League Wide

Let's face it. The 2004 Detroit Lions are a disappointment. Not in the fact that we expected a true winning season, but the fact that Charles Rogers is out, Joey Harrington isn't improving, and they have trouble holding a lead if they manage to get one. I was talking to a friend of mine, James Muir, and he made me realize that this gloom is not only within the Lions' organization, but spread league wide.

Let's take a look at the NFC. Of the 16 teams, only four of them have a winning record, two are at 6-6. Six teams are 5-7, and still talking about going to the playoffs. Our beloved Lions are one of those teams. They all believe that at 8-8 or 9-7, they can get into the playoffs.

What's the point?

This is the point - there is no point! Not one of the 5-7 teams has the offense to contend against teams such as Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, or New England. Even if they make it out of the first round, it will most likely be on a low scoring game, at home, proceeded by a trip to one of the big guns of the AFC.

Who wants to see that?

The players, the GMs, the Coaches, and the fans of the big guns, who are sure to win, putting them one game away from the Superbowl.

So what is the real problem?

There isn't one. I've decided we are in the dark ages for Lions football. They haven't been winners since 1957, and likely won't be winners anytime soon. What makes the last four seasons different is they are worse than usual. We've had 15 wins in four seasons, and the offense had degraded each year. It isn't even fun to watch them lose.

How do we fix it?

Get a new QB, find a new owner, and draft some players that will make a difference on the field, and not in the advertising of the team. Wins will sell tickets just as well as some local college guy who people liked while he was in school. Drafting also has to stop being based on what the national media says should be done.

Joey Harrington is an average QB. He is not real mobile, does not see the field well, but can make some plays, and get a team down the field a few yards. I do not feel is the man to lead this team to victory. What we need in Detroit is a veteran QB. Something to either challenge Harrington (maybe pushing him to a new level), or to take the job over completely.

The offensive line must be fixed. They do not open enough holes, and they cannot stop the QB from being sacked.

Do I think the Lions can be good?

Sure, why not? Will they be, probably eventually they will be pretty good. They are on the right course, but have had some set backs in my opinion. If they can get a good offensive line, get a QB that can make it into the end zone, then we should see 9-10 wins in a season.

Lolich's 2nd Chance at the Hall

It's hard to imagine that Mickey Lolich isn't in the Hall of the Fame. Lolich posted a career 3.59 ERA, with a 217-191 record in 16 seasons (his first 13 with Detroit). Among other honors, he was the 1968 World Series MVP, and a three time All-Star.

I guess that just proves how tough it is to get into the MLB Hall of Fame. This year Lolich gets another chance, this time on the Veterans Committee Ballot.

I say put him in the HOF. Other than two low 4.xx ERA seasons, he started strong, and ended strong. He has plenty of K's, he has plenty of wins, he has plenty of honors.

What do you think, let him in, or keep him out? Reasons/arguments?

Preview - NCB - High Point at Michigan

Michigan will play it's first game without Lester Abram and Graham Brown tonight in Ann Arbor against High Point. Michigan is clearly the favorite in this game; however, they must find a way to win without their heart soul, Abram.

Abram is out for the season, and will have surgery on his left shoulder. Abram is arguably the fuel behind the fire of the Wolverines.

Keys to the game will be getting their inside game going, and staying tough on defense.

Predictions: Michigan 72, High Point 57.

Tigers On The Right Track

The 2003 Detroit Tigers finished their season 43-119. Record losses in the books of the American League and the Detroit Tigers. Mike Maroth lost 20 games, Jeremy Bonderman would have if Trammell didn't move him to the bullpen for the final month of the season. It was a dismal, dark period for the Tigers.

The 2004 season brought new hope. The off-season signing of Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez brought back some fire among the players and fans not seen in years. Al Levine, Rondell White, and Fernando Vina also joined the Tigers, in hopes they could help a team rebuild. The efforts were noticed.

The Tigers finished the season 72-90. That doesn't sound impressive, but if you look at the 29 win increase from the prior season, it is significant. The Tigers could potentially gain another 10-15 wins this season with a couple key signings.

Let's first talk about the one that has already happened. Closing Pitcher Troy Percival signed with the Tigers in November, adding more depth to the bullpen. Percival's signing left Urbina as the odd man out, and could be either moved to a setup pitcher, or traded. My personal feelings would be to keep Urbina. Urbina is currently in Venezuela trying to recover his kidnapped mother. His trade value might be low not knowing when he's coming back.

Steve Finley and Troy Glaus are also on the Tigers' radar. It has been reported that each have been offered a contract. Glaus was a teammate of Percival’s in Anaheim the last few seasons, and Percival could be a factor in swinging his decision to sign with the Tigers. Finley would make an excellent addition to center field for the next couple of seasons while minor leaguer Granderson gets ready for the big leagues. Where does this leave Brandon Inge? They still have 2 outfield positions. Inge's arm strength could bolster the outfield, and keep his strong bat in the lineup.

Speaking of strong arms, Carl Pavano watch is still in effect. Pavano has a reported four year, $40 million offer from the Tigers. Last week him and agent Shapiro were in town, and left with a warm fuzzy feeling for the Tigers organization. I have seen nothing but positive reports from this meeting. Pavano spent the last few seasons in Florida. He played on the World Series winning team with Pudge, and credits Pudge for making him a better pitcher. Pudge could become a factor in this signing.

Time will tell what other signings the Tigers have in mind. They still lack bullpen pitchers, and could be compelled to go after another starter. The winter meetings start December 10. Should be a good outing.

ESPN.com - NBA - Recap - Pistons at Mavericks

Dirk Nowitzky’s 27 points was really not indicative of how he really shot tonight. Dirk show just 6-24 from the field, with 15-16 from the free throw line, and 8 rebounds. Rasheed Wallace was the defensive master mind. Rasheed finished with 13 points and 6 rebounds.

Detroit maintained scoring through the entire game. They defended the perimeter, kept the interior protected, and shot well on the other end of the court. This was one of the best performances I’ve seen from the Pistons all season.

Preview - Detroit Pistons at Dallas Mavericks

The Pistons make their final stop on their western conference outing. Detroit will take on the Dallas Mavericks at 8:30 PM EST. Dallas is 12-6 on the season. Their team isn't much different from last season in terms of what they're all about. Dallas is averaging 95.6 ppg, and giving up an average of 99.3 ppg.

The key to this game is to contain their offense, specifically Nowitzky. If they can guard the perimeter, and cut down on the second chance points, they should be able to shave 10 points off their average.

On the other side of the court, the Pistons must execute their inside game, and hit their free throws. They simply cannot afford to have a scoring drought against a team of this caliber.

Prediction: Pistons 89, Mavericks 85

Michigan Hoops Faces Setbacks

Injuries have plagued the Michigan basketball program. Graham Brown will be out four to six weeks following hernia surgery, and Lester Abram will be out for the remainder of the season after underground surgery on his left shoulder. Abram is a big part of the Wolverine's team on both ends of the court. Additionally, his veteran experience (lacking on the Michigan team), and his leadership on the team will surely be missed. Is a repeat of last year's NIT run even possible without Abram?

The Pistons Can Finally Work In Darko

"I think he's really trying, and from what I've seen, he's looking like he belongs out there for the first time..." -- Coach Larry Brown

I was reading thru the sports section of the Detroit News today, and came across an article by Joanne C. Gerstner talking about Darko's progress. I've noticed that Darko has been on the court more the last week. It seemed to all start against Charlotte in Detroit. Ben Wallace was serving a six game suspension, and the team was in foul trouble. Short on options, Darko came off the bench, and started to make a contribution. Darko, at one point, stole the ball, ran down the court, and dunked it. The Palace erupted.

Seems that he's finally feeling some confidence on the floor. Saturday night against the Hornets, he was able to log some early minutes, grab himself a basket, a block, and a rebound. He shot 1-5, but considering how much playing time he's actually seen, I'm sure that his shooting will improve with more playing time. I'm not getting overly excited, but right now he looks like he could be a regular contributor off the bench next season.

Mixed Weekend For Detroit Sports Fans

It seemed to be a mixed weekend for wins here in Detroit. The Pistons split their weekend, as did MSU hoops. MSU football lost, while the Lions won. Michigan hoops won by one point over Notre Dame to sum up their weekend. Overall, I think it was a satisfying weekend.

Let's start with the Lions...

Detroit 26
Arizona 12

On friday I predicted that John Navarre would get his first NFL win against the Lions. I hate to admit it, but I was wrong. Navarre looked pretty good in the first half. You could tell he was on a short play list, with mostly short passes. In the second half he had a complete meltdown. By the end of the game, the Lions picked off four of his passes. All things considering, I still think Navarre did a good job, and should continue to improve.

The major story of the game was Detroit RB Kevin Jones. Jones racked up 196 yards on 26 carries, including a 74 yard rush and one touchdown. Jones 196 yards was one yard short of Mel Farr's 1967 single game Lions' record. If it weren't for Jones, the Lions wouldn't have had the opportunity to get into the red zone and make way for four Hanson field goals.

Harrington continued to not produce touchdowns. He threw an early pass for a touchdown to WR Tai Streets. After that, he was again unable to get the ball out of the red zone, and into the end zone. Harrington's performance was mediocre at best, and the Lions must go out and find a veteran QB during the off-season.

The Pistons played two...

Friday:

Pistons 77
Spurs 80

The Pistons looked awful in this game until the final quarter. The pistons shot just 35% from the field, and 66% from the free throw line. There was also little defensive effort in the first half, and only 11 points scored in the third quarter. The Pistons have had trouble beating the Spurs in San Antonio for years. I was thinking this would be the year they finally went down there and won. Maybe they would have if they had not been without Ben Wallace for six games.

Saturday:

Pistons 92
Hornets 69

This was the best offensive game I've seen the Pistons play this season. Ben Wallace scored a career high 22 points, and Horace Jenkins came off the bench with 8 points for the Pistons. They started strong, and never looked back. Even Darko got to play a few minutes.

Speaking of Darko, he's looking better each time he steps on the floor. Maybe it's possible he won't be a bust?

Should we recap steroids for the weekend...?

Of course we should. I wrote last night about steroids in baseball. They are tarnishing the game. There has to be something done, and there has to be players held accountable. Not just in MLB, but in all sports. It came out this weekend that David Boston tested positive for steroids, and will likely sit out 4 games. If this becomes more of trend in the NFL, like it is in MLB, the steroids policies will have to stiffen up a bit. We simply cannot continue to tarnish the image of our professional sports. This has a bad effect on the leagues, and all players in those leagues.

Juice, Cream, and MLB

Jason Giambi seems to have brought new life to the discussion of steroids in Major League Baseball. In fact, not only has he brought back the talks, he's confirmed everything that most of us already knew -- he, and others, used steroids to boost their performance.

When Jason Giambi stepped on the field for the 2004 season, he had noticeably dropped in weight. He was asked if he had taken steroids, and repeatedly said "No." Why is it that he felt compelled to say no to the fans, but, when in front of a grand jury, he admitted to using them? This could have a lot to do with the health problems that Giambi faced this past summer. A tumor was found in his intestines after missing several weeks with an unexplained illness. I, like others, felt that it could very well be an after affect of the steroids he had taken. If this is the case, I can clearly see why Giambi would be so quick to spill the beans. A life threatening illness often changes people. Giambi is no different.

Let's go back and talk about 1998. The magical year that we witnessed two sluggers step up their home run hitting, and chase the Roger Marris 61 HR mark. Sosa and McGwire dueled it out all summer long. I had the pleasure of seeing both of them play in Detroit. Sosa hit 2 upper deck HRs (and incidentally lost the game in extra innings thanks to a Bobby Higginson homerun in the bottom of the ninth to tie it). McGwire hit four long fly outs (one with two outs in the ninth inning to give the Tigers a 4-2 win). Did I suspect anything? No. To me, it was what baseball needed to bring back fans to the game like we hadn't seen since before the 1994 labor dispute that pushed the World Series aside. I, like everyone, was caught in the moment. I guess I figured it happened in Babe Ruth’s career, it happened in Roger Marris’ career, why not in 1998 also?

So why stop in 1998? Obviously, they didn't. Sosa went on to have three 60+ HR seasons, and McGwire had two (including his 70 HR 1998 season). Three years after that magical season, Barry Bonds increased his bat speed, and hit 73 HRs. McGwire had to retire in 2002 because his body was falling apart. I've heard Bob Costas of NBC Sports say on more than one occasion that McGwire can't walk well anymore.

Steroids will do that to you. They can ruin your testosterone levels, decay your joints, and in some cases, end your life. Take a look at Ken Caminiti. Caminiti shocked the world when he told Sports Illustrated that he, and others, used steroids. This sent the media into sniff mode seeking others, making accusations, and trying to get players to agree to drug tests. Did I mention yet that earlier this year Caminiti died? Among steroids, Caminiti was into other drugs. Do I think steroids were the only cause of his death? Not a chance. His autopsy showed Cocaine as the cause of death. I just believe steroids put him on the path. Caminiti mentioned health problems before his death. He attributed them to steroids.

I spent the entire weekend digesting the news that Barry Bonds took cream from his trainer. The same trainer that gave the cream to Giambi, Sheffield, and others. I have heard many cases from different angles. The most popular seems to be that steroids can't give you better hand-eye coordination, so who cares, blah, blah, blah. I only have on thing to say about it.

Cop out!

I don't think you will ever find a baseball player that credits steroids to improving their ability to hit the ball. What you will find is a baseball player that credits the increased amount of power they hit the ball with to steroids. Barry Bonds' bat speed increased 25% over one off season. He was in his late 30s. The steroids lifted Bonds' HR count from 30-40 to 73, and a new MLB record. When asked what he was doing different, he said he didn't know. It's funny, that's the same story he gave in his testimony last week to the grand jury. He took the cream, but didn't know what it was. Hey, at least he's consistent.

Ask yourself a simple question. Should there be asterisks in the record book next to the records of people who used steroids to improve their performance? Hank Aaron was asked this question over the weekend. While he didn't say no, he did say that would be up to MLB officials. I have a better answer. Ban them from the game, strip them of their records, and treat them worse than Pete Rose.

The topic of steroids in baseball makes me very angry. When I hear of a player taking steroids, and breaking a record, it makes think that there is no point to it all.

There isn't.

We shouldn't put up with steroids. We should be angry about players using them to gain an edge. Cheaters should not be allowed to keep their records. If Roger Marris has to carry asterisks next to his record for several years, then why shouldn't Barry Bonds get the same or worse treatment? The same goes for Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, and all the rest of the players that were hoisted above everyone else. If nothing else, someone should publish a new record book that excludes the cheaters. I would bet that book would be a best seller.

I have a simple message to Bud Selig and MLB. Take action now. Take hard action. Do not hesitate to end up in front of an arbitrator fighting against the MLBPA. You have to salvage the name of Major League Baseball, and make your own past hypocrisy right. You watched the steroid machines break records, and turned your back on it while ratings soared. You cared more about people watching baseball than you did the integrity of the game. Now you must pay the price.

I first ask for Giambi and Bonds to forfeit their contracts, and retire.

Bud Selig, I ask you make this right. After it is right, do the respectable thing, and resign your position as commissioner of Major League Baseball.

Michigan State bounced with a 66-60 win in the consolation game of the BB&T Classic. Tom Izzo said "I'll be honest with you, it was a hard game to play in for us, I think we had looked forward to hopefully getting a shot at Maryland in the championship game. When you come to a tournament like this as a ranked team, you don't want to play in the consolation game." Like it or not, Tom, this win was important.

ESPN.com - NFL - Recap - Arizona Cardinals at Detroit Lions

The story of this game was Kevin Jones. Jones rushed for a career high 196 yards, including a 74 yard run, and 1 TD. I particularly pleased with the Lions' defense and running game today. Hanson did his duty with 4 FGs and 2 PATs. I was still disappointed with Harrington. Although he showed some signs of improvement over the last two weeks, he still was unable to get the ball into the end zone more than once.
