Tigers Seek Finley For Center Field

Yesterday I wrote about the Tigers' off-season efforts. Here is a follow up on Steve Finley.

The deadline passed last night, and the Dodgers did not offer Steve Finley arbitration. That leaves Steve Finley open to the free agent market, where the Tigers have reportedly offered the 39 year old center fielder a two year, $16 million contract.

Finley is coming off a 36 home run, gold glove year in which he played all 162 games. Finley is in unusually great shape for a player of his age, and would make a great addition until Granderson is ready to step up to the MLB level.

I feel that the Tigers are justified in this offer. Though it may seem high at first, remember the Tigers are going to have to slightly over pay for players, and Finley's health and numbers rival anyone in their mid-30s.

Thoughts, comments, disagreements?

Steve Finley is good but he is also old. I would love for the Tigers to get him without giving up too much money for him.

Old, but healthy, and no signs of injuries. It does say something for a guy who, at 39, played all regular season games.

Also, keep in mind that to keep the team in contention for the division, and buy time before your youngster is ready, sometimes you have to overpay. I too wouldn't mind seeing them pay less, but I don't think that will be possible, given the lack of center fielders available.
